You accrue personal leave each pay period so you have time for rest and recreation, illness, injury, child care, bereavement, personal business, and any other reason you may need time away from work.

Note: You may be covered under the short term disability plan if you experience a serious and extended illness or injury that is not work related.


WHO get’s paid time off?

You - if you are a regular full-time, part-time, or limited assignment employee. Temporary and on-call employees may accrue sick leave as provided by WA Paid Sick Leave.


how much time do I get?

You accrue personal leave (PL) each pay period following an accrual schedule. The longer you work for the PUD, the more PL you will accrue.

PL accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees. You do not accrue PL while you are on occupational disability leave or on leave without pay.


when can i start using PL?

You can start using PL as soon as you have leave accrued in your leave bank and your leave is approved. Let your supervisor know at least twice as early as the length of the requested time (e.g. give two weeks notice for one week leave). If your leave is unplanned (e.g. you need to stay home with a sick child), let your supervisor know as soon as possible.


Do I have to take pL?

Yes. We recognize that everyone needs time away from work to unplug and recharge. That’s why you must take at least five PL days in each payroll year for the first five years, and at least ten PL days thereafter. No minimum leave is required in partial years of employment (first and last).

You will forfeit these minimums unless failure to take the minimum amount of PL was due to occupational disability or extended illness.

 

how much PL can i bank?

You can keep up to 700 hours in your personal leave bank. If you were hired before April 1, 2011, your personal leave bank cannot exceed the greater of 1200 hours or the number of hours accrued as of April 1, 1996.

Any accrued personal leave hours exceeding the maximum at the end of the payroll year will be cashed out.


can I cash out PL?

Yes. Providing that you have enough leave accrued to meet your minimum leave requirement, you can convert unused accrued PL to:

  1. your deferred compensation account

  2. HRA VEBA plan

  3. or receive payment via a separate check.


What happens if I leave the PUD?

If you leave the PUD after having worked 6 months or more continuously, your unused PL will be cashed out with your last paycheck.
